Welcome to Kestrels!

Our class teacher is Mrs Fahey.

Knowledge organisers can be found at the bottom of the page for key knowledge and vocabulary the children will be learning. You can use these to practice at home.

Topic

This summer term our topic is Anglo-Saxon for summer 1 and Viking for summer 2. The children are keen historians and we will be developing our skills in research, analysis of primary sources such as artefacts and looking at historic maps of Great Britain. The children will have a greater understanding of how England came to be and the impact of Christianity on the Anglo-Saxons. We will focus on the life and accomplishments of Alfred the Great and his fierce battle against the Vikings to unify the Seven Kindoms.

Math

This spring term we will be exploring time.

English

We have started our summer term looking at Classical Poetry. In groups the children have learned a verse of William Wordsworth's 'Daffodils' and then written their own nature poems, mimicking Wordsworth's rhyming pattern. Using our Anglo Saxon topic we will be revisiting diary entries and writing a historical narrative as well.

In spellings we have been looking at homophones, prefixes and suffixes and how these impact meaning.

Science

This spring term our unit on ‘animals including humans.' The children have already learned about the organs involved in the digestive system and we will be taking a closer look at our teeth and finally, constructing and interpreting a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey.

DT

In DT we have been designing and building our own castles using 3D nets and toilet roll tubes. We will be moving on to design and build Pavilions using structure and frames.

Music

In music we are looking at body percussion and how music is built up in layers. This will include the children composing their own piece as a group. They will need to develop their evaluation skills in order to make suggestions on how they can improve their final piece.

RE

In RE we will be looking at the Christian theological topic of the Kingdom of God. Specifically we are looking at what happened at Pentecost, Paul's missionary journeys and the rise of Christianity across Europe, linking this to our previous Romans topic from autumn and our current Anglo Saxon topic. The children will be reflecting on what it means to be a Christian and belong to the Kingdom of God.

PE Days

Our PE days are Mondays and Wednesday. Children need to come into school in their PE uniform (white polo shirt, school jumper and dark joggers or short with trainers). PE is taught by My Thomas.

Class book

Our class book for summer 1 is Anglo-Saxon Boy by Tony Bradman.
